The gearbox is the most failure-prone, highest-maintenance component in any rod-pump or screw-pump drive train. It leaks oil, wears bearings, strips gears, and requires regular oil changes — all while consuming 3 – 8% of input power in frictional losses. 1. Pole-count torque multiplication: Motor torque is proportional to the product of magnetic flux and the number of poles. A 40-pole motor produces — for the same flux density and current — 10 times the torque of a 4-pole motor at 1/10th the speed. 2. Direct shaft coupling: The motor shaft directly drives the load at its native speed — no gearbox, no belts, no chains. For beam pumps, the multipole motor’s hollow shaft accepts the polished rod directly. For screw pumps, a flange-mount connects to the drive head. The only rotating components are the motor bearings and the load shaft — eliminating gear-mesh friction, oil-churning losses, and seal leakage.
3. Multispeed flexibility: For applications requiring occasional speed changes (e.g., different pump speeds for different well conditions), pole-changing windings provide 2 – 3 discrete synchronous speeds from a single motor winding — no VFD required. For continuous speed regulation, the motor pairs with a VFD operating in sensorless or closed-loop vector control. At very low speeds (<10 rpm), a resolver or absolute encoder provides precise rotor position feedback for smooth torque delivery without cogging.
4. Regenerative capability: On beam pumps, the downstroke is an overhauling load — gravity pulls the rod string down. The multipole motor, driven by a 4-quadrant VFD, operates as a generator during the downstroke, returning energy to the DC bus or grid. This regenerative braking recovers 10 – 15% of cycle energy that would otherwise be dissipated as heat in a mechanical brake.
